Struggling with ethical dilemmas? Discover the RIGHT framework, a practical tool to navigate complex moral dilemmas. Learn how to make sound ethical decisions, prioritise integrity, and build a stronger moral compass.

How To Do What’s Right

Whether in our personal lives or in the workplace, we are constantly confronted with ethical challenges that require us to make difficult decisions. These dilemmas often leave us feeling uncertain and unsure of the best course of action. As we all know, the right decision is usually the hardest choice to make – but it doesn’t have to be.

Having recognised this evident need for a clear and concise method for ethical decision-making, I developed the RIGHT (pun intended) framework. This acronym helps us to navigate these complexities and arrive at decisions aligned with our values and principles.

More Than Just Rules

While rules play an integral part in creating a safe society, they don’t cover every possible dilemma, and sometimes, blindly following the rules can even lead to unethical outcomes. Thus, the RIGHT framework facilitates a more holistic and thoughtful approach: urging us to go beyond simply asking “What are the rules?” and prompting deeper consideration of our values and the impact of our choices on others.

“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around them.”

Plato

The RIGHT Way to Make Ethical Choices

In essence, the RIGHT framework consists of five key questions, each designed to illuminate a specific aspect of an ethical dilemma:

Rules: What are the rules, laws, regulations, or codes that govern this situation?

Integrity: How can we act with integrity in this situation, meaning what are the moral values that might guide our decision?

Good: Who will benefit from our actions, and how?

Harm: Who could be harmed by our actions, and how?

Truth: Can we justify our decision and be accountable for our actions?

The questions are just the starting point. When put into practice, the RIGHT framework enables ethical decision-making by providing a structured, step-by-step approach to analysing complex situations. It prompts us to consider multiple perspectives and potential consequences before arriving at a decision.
